In August 2026, we will welcome the 15th International Havemeyer Foundation Horse Genome Workshop to Lexington, Ky. This is a unique opportunity to connect the greater equine community with the world’s leading genetic researchers, and we hope that you will consider supporting this endeavor.

A foal and mare enjoy the warm spring weather at the Equine Unit on the Maine Chance Farm. When the human genome project began in 1990, it was clear that advances in basic biology and health research would require the development and use of genomic tools. The scientific community working on the horse was small; it was evident that similar advancements for equine genomics would require a large and highly collaborative group effort. Given this challenge, the First International Horse Genome workshop was created. As a result, over 100 scientists from 25 countries came together to create the first equine gene map. These workshops have continued every two years, resulting in significant advancements in genomic tools and discovery in the horse.

The 14 previous meetings have provided a foundation for necessary collaborations that created many tools and resources to keep horse genomics researchers at the forefront of genetic research among farmed animals. While we have been very successful as a research community, we aim to increase our communities' intentional engagement with our equine industry stakeholders and partners to continue to drive advancement at an accelerated pace.

To promote the aim of improving equine health and to facilitate communication with the broader equine community, an Industry Engagement Day has been added to our 2026 meeting

Preliminary Agenda for Equine Industry Engagement Day

  • Presentations by scientists on topics relevant to horse owners and breeders
  • Roundtable discussions between industry stakeholders and scientists to identify current areas of concern for breeders
  • Informal lunch discussions on various topics of equine genetics and bioinformatic technologies
  • Workshop on the future of equine genomics and industry priorities, and how best to apply research findings.

Sponsorship Levels

We hope that you will consider supporting the 15th International Havemeyer Foundation Horse Genome Workshop in August 2026.

Historically, the Dorothy Russell Havemeyer Foundation provided funding to support the biannual workshops, with the remainder raised through grants and fundraising efforts such as this. These funds are used to support conference costs and accommodations for invited participants, ultimately increasing conference participation from scientists around the world. This allows us to promote collaboration, create global research standards and ultimately improve the quality and consistency of our research. We hope you will consider supporting this conference to make a lasting impact on the equine genomics industry. Available sponsorships are below:
